What Is Off-Grid Solar
A stand-alone power station for your property
An off-grid solar system generates and stores 100% of a property’s power with no connection to the electricity grid at all. It pairs solar panels with a bank of solar batteries — traditionally deep cycle, increasingly lithium — sized to run the home for three to five days on stored charge alone, backed by an auto-start generator for extended low-sun periods.
It’s the right fit for homes in semi-rural, rural or remote parts of the Albury-Wodonga region where there’s no practical grid access, or where the cost of a new connection — particularly on long SWER (Single Wire Earth Return) lines — makes going off-grid the more sensible investment.
Get it wrong, though, and an undersized system means running the generator every second night. Designing a stand-alone system is very different to a grid-connected or hybrid one: we factor in ALL your energy usage, so as part of your initial consultation we’ll ask you to complete a load profile sheet.

A monitoring device keeps you across day-to-day performance, but it’s no substitute for a professional look-over once a year — more often on dirt roads or in high-pollution areas.

Off-grid solar, answered straight
What's the main difference between off-grid and grid-connected systems?
Your reliance on the utility grid. Off-grid systems generate and store all your power independently with no grid connection at all. Grid-connected systems stay connected, using solar first and drawing from the grid when needed — add a battery to that setup and it becomes a hybrid system.
Is my property suited to an off-grid system?
It comes down to four things: how much sun your site gets, whether your roof or land suits the array, how much power you actually use day to day, and whether the cost stacks up against connecting to the grid. Will I still lose power during an outage?
Only if your battery is depleted and the auto-start generator is out of fuel, or something needs attention. Off-grid systems are your own personal power station — outages on the wider grid don’t affect you at all.
Ground-mounted or roof-mounted panels for off-grid?
Ground mounts suit rural properties with the space, or where distance from the house makes sense — though there are additional costs. Roof-mount is usually cheaper and easier to maintain, clean and expand later; most of our regional installs are roof-mount unless the site says otherwise.
Is off-grid battery storage safe?
Yes. Modern lithium batteries carry no risk of hydrogen gas emission during charging, and are the standard we recommend for new off-grid systems. Older lead-acid batteries are also safe when properly ventilated. Every system we install meets our current Clean Energy Council accreditation and safety standards. In off-grid setups, panels are typically installed on the shed roof, the battery inside the shed, and the generator beside it.
Can off-grid systems work in town, not just rural properties?
Technically yes, but it rarely makes financial sense where mains power is reliable and close by — a hybrid system usually delivers the resilience without the cost of full autonomy. Off-grid earns its keep on rural and remote properties, or specific applications like a shed, pump or outbuilding.
