What Is the Federal Battery Rebate?

The Federal Battery Rebate under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program is now live and helping eligible Australian households reduce the upfront cost of home battery storage.

The incentive is no longer a fixed dollar amount. It is calculated per usable kilowatt hour and applied as an upfront discount. From 1 May 2026, the rate will decrease from roughly $311 per usable kWh to around $252 per usable kWh and will move to a bi annual reduction model with tiered, lower payments for larger systems. This means the rebate you receive depends on your battery size and when you install.

For households in Howlong, Corowa, Beechworth, Chiltern, Yackandandah and surrounding areas, this can still translate into substantial savings when adding a battery to an existing solar system or installing a new solar and battery package. Acting before May 2026 secures the higher rate.

Whether you are on a rural property or in town, a home battery allows you to store excess solar power, reduce reliance on the grid, lower power bills and maintain supply during blackouts.

With Solar Integrity, you receive expert advice, quality installation and a battery solution tailored to homes across North East Victoria and southern NSW.

How Much Could You Save with the Federal Battery Rebate?

The Federal Battery Rebate is now live and can significantly reduce the upfront cost of an eligible battery system for homeowners across Wodonga, Albury, Rutherglen, Tallangatta, Henty and regional Victoria.

The incentive is calculated per usable kilowatt hour rather than as a flat percentage, and it will decrease from 1 May 2026. Installing before that date allows you to secure the higher rebate rate and maximise your savings.

Here’s what those savings can look like now:

Battery Size Typical Installed Cost Estimated Rebate  New Approx. Cost
10 kWh $12,000 $3,100 $8,900
13.5 kWh $16,000 $4,200 $11,800
20 kWh $20,000 $6,000 $14,000

Here’s what those savings can look like after 1 May 2026:

Am I Eligible for the Federal Battery Rebate in the Albury-Wodonga Region?

To access the Federal Battery Rebate, your home battery system will need to meet a few key requirements set by the government:

  • You own or occupy the property
  • Your solar and battery setup is connected to the grid and complies with all approved safety and performance standards
  • Your battery is installed by an approved provider—like Solar Integrity
  • The battery must be VPP-capable (Virtual Power Plant ready), though joining a VPP is optional

If you’re based in Wodonga, Albury, Baranduda, Beechworth, or surrounding areas in North East Victoria or Southern NSW, your property is highly likely to be eligible.

Can Off-Grid Systems Access the Federal Battery Rebate?

Yes, off-grid solar and battery systems in regional areas such as Holbrook, Mt Beauty, Rutherglen, Bright and the Upper Murray can be eligible for the live Federal Battery Rebate, provided they meet the approved technical, safety and installation standards.

The incentive is calculated per usable kilowatt hour and will decrease from 1 May 2026, with lower rates applying over time. This means the rebate amount depends on your battery size and when your system is installed.

For example, a 40 kWh off-grid solar and battery system could attract substantial support, potentially saving many thousands of dollars at the current rate. Acting before the scheduled reduction helps secure the higher incentive, making the transition to fully off-grid power more affordable for larger homes and agricultural properties requiring reliable, round the clock energy.
